Feedback – Geneva Roundtable – 14 November 2006

Last night some 120 people attended the IUN and GWIT roundtable on the “Future of Corporate Communications”.  If you did attend, please complete the short feedback survey. A more detailed report will be posted on this blog in the next days, meanwhile here are some links following some of the points raised:

– there was a lot of discussion about social media: here is an interesting guide (pdf) that explains all the terms (wiki, blog, podcast, social bookmarking, etc) and the relevance for communications / PR.

Second life was discussed a lot (the above image is from this virtual world) – “What is this exactly?” was the question of many participants. This press article explains well how it works.

– and finally in my welcome presentation, I touched on the importance of evaluating communication activities – I had some question after asking my advice on evaluating corporate communications – if you are interested, there is plenty of information on my evaluation blog, intelligent measurement.

Citizen reporting in Geneva

There is a new website online GenevaLunch that mixes news from professional sources and citizen journalists – and all in English. If you are living in the Geneva region, there is a lot of information and news about what is going on.

Also for all the budding writers out there, they are looking for community reporters – could be your big break!

LIFT – A conference on technology & communications

For those of you working in the field of communications and new media, there is a fascinating conference coming to Geneva in 2007- LIFT:

LIFT is a gathering of talented observers, explorers, and builders who discuss the current challenges and creative solutions presented by emerging technologies. LIFT is three days to face cutting edge business models, bold predictions, radical thinking, and get new ideas to inject into your own part of the planet.

The  conference was held for the first time this year and it was well worth attending (consult some of the 2006 presentations).

And it’s not costly: 295 CHF for 3 day programme, you can register online.

Glenn

Full disclosure: Geneva Communicators blog admits to being involved with the LIFT conference: Patricia is working on the editorial side and Glenn is working on the conference evaluation, which he did for LIFT 06 – and if you are really interested, read the LIFT 06 evaluation report online.

One of the sharpest PR bloggers around, Constantin Basturea has just updated his list of PR and Communication Blogs. The list is by country, and lo and behold, the only blog listed under Switzerland is the Geneva Communicators blog! How great it is for us two *false* Swiss to be representing our dear homeland…

One of the leading names in blogging is overhauling its service in an attempt to catch up with the competition.
Blogger, which is owned by Google, has redesigned its site to make it easier to use and added new features, including posting by e-mail.

“The focus is on lifting the barrier to start blogging,” said Evan Williams, co-founder of Blogger.

There are hundreds of thousands of blogs, creating an eco-system of ever-changing ideas on the net.

Progress in videoconferencing

An interesting article in the International Herald Tribune on progress with video conferencing technology;

The videoconference comes of age

By Eric Pfanner International Herald Tribune

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2006

LONDON When Ken Crangle, a Hewlett-Packard executive in Corvallis, Oregon, wants to meet with colleagues in farflung corners of the world, he avoids the airport and instead walks down the hall to a room equipped with $425,000 worth of communications gear.He clicks a computer mouse and his colleagues appear life size on high-definition video screens. They speak as if they are with him in the room, without the delay or jerkiness typically associated with such links. If there are several people on the other end, the sound system automatically adjusts to help direct participants’ gaze from one speaker to the next.”What you experience very quickly changes your impressions of videoconferencing,” Crangle said in an interview by telephone.
