Different approaches to design in response to crisis situations – international organizations

As part of the Certificate of advanced Studies « Visible or invisible: design in international organizations », Ruedi Baur, and the University of Art of Geneva (HEAD – Genève) in partnership with The Graduate Institute Geneva (IHEID)  have organised a series of lectures on the issues of representation and design of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations; a series of 10 seminars to better understand issues of images and communication at a global level and to decode interactions between citizens and organizations.

Next one will be the sixth seminar:

Different approaches to design in response to crisis situations

16-17 April 2015, UNHCR, Rue de Montbrillant, Geneva.

This seminar will bring together and analyse the various exemplary projects carried out by designers for humanitarian organizations and other NGOs, and will present the places where research and other experiments are being conducted around the world. Various approaches will be considered, not in order to contrast them, but to assess their relevance in response to the various issues. Analysis of work commissioned, or not commissioned, from designers will allow needs to be assessed and, perhaps, the reasons for certain failures to be understood. The first day of the seminar will consist of a succession of case studies, each lasting 20-30 minutes. The examples will be chosen to show a broad range of approaches and issues. Designers will present their projects in dialogue with their clients, to reveal both the benefits and the drawbacks of each experience. These examples will be enriched by others that concern social sectors but are not actually work commissioned by NGOs. The second day will be devoted to analysis of these cases. Guest observers will endeavour to draw conclusions.

Next lunchtime seminar – Mastering your Internet Strategy, Thursday 23 April 2015

Dear communicators,
We are pleased to announce our next event for 2015:
Lunchtime seminar –  Mastering your Internet Strategy
Today, the Internet is becoming an increasingly central element to every organisation’s communication strategy. Greg Rice and Paolo Valdemarin will help you discover how to optimise your organisation’s Internet strategy and learn about best practices for working with third party developers.
Date: Thursday 23 April 2015
Time: 12h30 to 14h00
Location: The Swiss Press Club, Route de Ferney 106, La Pastorale, 1202 Geneva.
Fee: CHF 20.- per person includes drinks and snacks – payable at the door.

Whether it’s a web site or a web service, a web app or a smartphone app, an intranet or a private social network, you have probably already started incorporating Internet technology into the core of your organisation. Regardless of your activity, sector, size or location, if you haven’t yet, it should clearly be on your agenda. During our session we will explore a number of techniques that help with understanding, sharing and managing small and large Internet software projects, making sure that no resources are wasted and that intellectual properties are carefully developed and protected. Given that most organisations can not afford an in-house IT department, understanding how to create solid and productive relationships with specialised external service providers is becoming a fundamentally important skill.
Places are limited due to the venue size, so please register early for the event.

About the speakers:

Greg Rice has been in the IT industry for 30 years and is the founder of Activate Media, one of the first Internet consultancies in London. Over the years he has been involved in several start-ups, two of which evolved into public companies. He brings a wealth of knowledge to any Internet based endeavour.
Paolo Valdemarin has been helping companies to establish their technology strategy for more than 25 years. He has launched countless internet projects in Europe and the US and is co-founder of “State of the Net“, one of the main Internet conferences in Italy.
