19th Fete de la Communication – 2 September 2016

Geneva press club building

The 19th edition of the annual “Fete de la Communication” will be held at the Swiss Press Club on Friday 2 September 2016 from 17h30 – 22h30.

The theme of this year’s gathering will be “Le Vivre ensemble à Genève” and it will be hosted by the Foundation pour Geneve, who is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

The “Fete de la Communication” gathers communications professionals, journalists, and others to spend an evening socialising with music and a buffet dinner. More information to follow closer to the date.

Junior Communication Officer (internship), GICHD, Geneva

Duration: 12 months, with remuneration

Context

The GICHD is offering a new internship placement of one-year, to junior professionals who recently graduated in such fields of studies as communications, marketing, public relations, digital media, journalism, or, possibly, in the field related to international relations.

This internship is intended to provide a young individual starting her/his career in communications, marketing and social media with an opportunity to gain exposure in international development cooperation, mine action and human security as well as in the processes of communication management of an organisation with a broad international outreach.

The Junior Communication Officer will also develop the capacity to interact effectively in an international and multicultural environment. The internship is supervised by the Communication team in the Policy and Communication division. The Junior Communication Officer works with and supports the fast-paced and dynamic Communication Team, where s/he will be coached on assigned responsibilities.

Description

Assistance in the drafting, production and dissemination of publications, documentation, presentations.

Drafting digital content in French and English for social media channels, monitoring online communities, moderating user-generated content.

Participation in the preparation of workshops, conferences and other events organised or attended by the GICHD, including correspondence, logistics and attendance on behalf of the GICHD.

Research on new social media trends, suggesting new platforms for use.

Review of content on current GICHD website and on other websites.

Collection of text and photographic material to update GICHD website and publications, as well as digital communication channels.

Creation of new content, based on in-house requests, including new training courses, registration pages, publication and equipment catalogue records.

Administrative processes support, such as consultancy contracts, expense reports, minutes of meetings, managing corporate supplies, maintenance of the documentation platform and databases.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Recent post-graduate studies in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Digital / Social Media, Journalism, or possibly in International Relations, International Humanitarian Law, Political Sciences.
One year (approximately) of prior work or internship experience, preferably in the humanitarian, development or international cooperation sector.

Strong writing and editing skills; ability to write in different styles, to different audiences.

Knowledge of multiple social media platforms and trends is a must.

Excellent IT skills: proficiency in Windows is required; knowledge of content management systems an asset; willingness to learn and experiment with new platforms and applications.

Excellent knowledge of English and strong command of French are required; knowledge of Arabic, Spanish, Russian or Portuguese is appreciated.

Ability to work autonomously; good self-organisation skills, attention to detail are expected.

Ability and interest to interact with colleagues of diverse cultures; respect for diversity.

Interest in development, post-conflict reconstruction, human security, disarmament affairs.

The Junior Communication Officer position is recruited locally and not an international basis, it is intended primarily to post-graduates who have studied or completed internships in the International Geneva. A work permit will be provided by the Swiss authorities through the GICHD, if necessary as regards the current administrative situation of the incumbent.

Lunchtime seminar wrap-up

Thanks to all the GCN members who attended the lunchtime seminar at the Swiss Press Club last Friday. Thank you also to  GCN co-founder Glenn O’Neil who shared very interesting insights about “challenges and complexities of communication evaluation”.

Communication is increasingly recognised as a powerful and strategic tool for organisations. Yet little focus is placed on how to evaluate communication activities. Drawing from his recent PhD studies and over a decade of experience in evaluating communication campaigns and programmes, Glenn O’Neil will set out the challenges and complexities of evaluation and offer insights into solutions and approaches to ensure that evaluation brings value to communication professionals and their organisation.

The consultant will contribute to wide outreach with the media both internationally and within South Africa and well informed and wide coverage of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES.

Expected duration
35 working days during the period 1 June to 15 October 2016 (working days distributed as following: 1 June to 31 August – one day per week in average estimated to 15 working days and 15 September to 15 October estimated to 20 working days)

Duties and Responsibilities
The CITES Secretariat requires the service of an media expert to assist it with the preparation of media related activities before, at and immediately at the conclusion of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to be held in Johannesburg from 24 September to 5 October 2016.

The consultant shall, under the supervision of the Secretary-General of CITES, Mr John E. Scanlon, assist the CITES Secretariat to:
– Develop a Cop 17 press kit and other media material as required.
– Prepare press releases and manage press conferences for CoP 17 as necessary and as directed.
– Interact with CITES and Host country staff, Parties, journalists and all media representatives.

The consultant must be available and willing to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa and provide media support on site at the venue of CoP 17 (dates likely to be 20 September to 7 October, including travel time).

Qualifications/special skills
The consultant requested for this work should have the following qualifications and experiences.
• Previous significant professional experience in media activities is required.
• Deep experience in dealing with the media in an international setting is required.
• Fluent in English – oral and written – is required.
• Experience of working with media representatives is required.
• Familiarity with the UN system and international conventions is required.
• Ability to work against tight deadlines; awareness of and respect for political sensitivities and cultural differences is required.
• Fluency French and/or Spanish (in addition to English) would be an advantage

Next GCN Workshop Day – Friday 29 April 2016

The Geneva Communicators Network is pleased to announce its next workshop day of 2016 to be held on Friday 29 April at Webster University Geneva.

Three one-day workshops will be run simultaneously including a networking lunch and coffee breaks where all participants can meet and discuss. The groups will be small – maximum 12-15 participants – to allow instructors to address specific needs.
