The consultant will contribute to wide outreach with the media both internationally and within South Africa and well informed and wide coverage of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES.

Expected duration
35 working days during the period 1 June to 15 October 2016 (working days distributed as following: 1 June to 31 August – one day per week in average estimated to 15 working days and 15 September to 15 October estimated to 20 working days)

Duties and Responsibilities
The CITES Secretariat requires the service of an media expert to assist it with the preparation of media related activities before, at and immediately at the conclusion of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to be held in Johannesburg from 24 September to 5 October 2016.

The consultant shall, under the supervision of the Secretary-General of CITES, Mr John E. Scanlon, assist the CITES Secretariat to:
– Develop a Cop 17 press kit and other media material as required.
– Prepare press releases and manage press conferences for CoP 17 as necessary and as directed.
– Interact with CITES and Host country staff, Parties, journalists and all media representatives.

The consultant must be available and willing to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa and provide media support on site at the venue of CoP 17 (dates likely to be 20 September to 7 October, including travel time).

Qualifications/special skills
The consultant requested for this work should have the following qualifications and experiences.
• Previous significant professional experience in media activities is required.
• Deep experience in dealing with the media in an international setting is required.
• Fluent in English – oral and written – is required.
• Experience of working with media representatives is required.
• Familiarity with the UN system and international conventions is required.
• Ability to work against tight deadlines; awareness of and respect for political sensitivities and cultural differences is required.
• Fluency French and/or Spanish (in addition to English) would be an advantage
